Everyday Bombshell

Two items of note in today's outfit:
1.) My hair was so incredibly tall that I couldn't manage to fit it in the full body shot.

2.) I'm wearing a skirt from KMart, by way of Kimberly.

I've never bought clothes from KMart, so was surprised at how much I like this skirt. KMart has put a lot of effort lately into recreating their clothing lines, even creating one specifically geared toward a younger plus size customer. Although this silky blue and brown skirt isn't part of that line, it's a testament to the cuteness that can be found at this discount store.

Beauty Moment- Calyx Fragrance

Marie Claire sent me a perfume sample, asking my thoughts and whether or not I like the scent. The perfume is called Calyx and, as far as I can tell, is one of the very few products still created under the Prescriptives brand. In any case, I haven't been able to stop smelling myself since the first spritz.

According to Macys.com, the scent is described as this:

The exhilarating top note of Calyx includes a profusion of grapefruit and mandarin with a tropical blend of passion fruit, mango, papaya and guava. The refreshing middle note is a bouquet of freesia, muguet, neroli, rose, lily, jasmin and marigold. The deep sensual base note is a luscious weaving of oakmoss, orris, sandalwood and vetiver.

I firmly believe that a good perfume will delight upon first spritz and then develop into something more and more complex and wonderful the longer it's on your skin. And that's exactly what I experienced with Calyx.

Here are the stages my nose went through:
1. Oooh! That's fresh and fruity.
2. Hmmmm...I guess it's not that fruity.
3. I could really go for a grapefruit. Why don't we have any grapefruit?
4. Wow, this is scent is kind of sexy.
5. No musk, that's kind of nice.
6. I officially want to bathe in this stuff.

Because of the very fresh, crisp top note I initially thought this would be a day scent. But the more I wear it, the more I think it would be a really unexpected and unique scent for night.

I recently went through my perfume collection (ok, all 4 bottles) and chucked all but 1 because they're so old the scents were not what they once were. I've found my replacement - so, thanks Marie Claire!

Virtual Shopping the LB Magalog

When I got home from work today, a new Lane Bryant magalog peeked out of the pile of mail on the counter. I brushed away other random stuff (bills, whatnot, you know the unimportant things)and scoured through the latest LB collection. Lane Bryant's VP of Marketing, Jay Dunn, mentioned at the Curvy Revolution that the company would be introducing new collections with more frequency; he wasn't kidding! I, for one, am all in favor of that.

In this latest offering, I love the garden-inspired colors: lots of rich purples, greens, blues and pinks. And for once, I'm more into the separates than I am the dresses. Although I don't really need any new clothes at the moment, I still get excited about coupons and thinking about what I would buy... and magalogs always seem to come with the One for You/One for a Friend coupon. So here's what I would buy with my $75 off a purchase of $225 coupon. I would, of course, maximize my savings by taking advantage of the Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off deal on all tops (now through April 17th). Let the virtual shopping begin! With discounts and coupons, I could get all of this for about $160. Not bad.

What do you think of the new collection? What would you like to pick up with this round of coupons?

A Milestone

I'm celebrating the fact that Bombshell Beauty Blog first popped up into the blogosphere four years ago, today. My first post declared my goal of sharing all the excitement and ideas and resources I possibly can for a plus size woman to express herself with clothes. And you know what? That goal hasn't changed at all.

I love sharing with you the clothes and styles and retailers who inspire me, along with the beauty products I don't want to live without. I love it because I love you guys- every single person who reads Bombshell Beauty means a whole lot to me. I've made some amazing friends of fellow bloggers, readers, and people in the plus size fashion industry. I had no idea four years ago when I pushed Publish Post for the very first time, that this blog would become what it is in my life.

Fourth anniversary presents are typically flowers, so I'm giving myself this great big bouquet of orchids.

And what's a party without cake? (Or cupcake, to be exact)

I also gave Bombshell Beauty a little makeover - I hope you like it as much as I do. The design was created by the very fantastic Kimmie from Blue Paper Lanterns. Cheers!

Everyday Bombshell

I swear, I've never worn so much black in my life as I have this winter. In an effort to force myself to start wearing more color dammit, I made a point of accessorizing with the brightest, pinkest necklace in my collection.

Hair's the Story...

I'm someone who often has trouble leaving well enough alone. Case in point? My hair. This is what I've done over the past couple years.

I've worn it short and wavy; short and sleek; mid-length and kind of kicky; longer with lots of layers (and highlights! Yow).

Over the past 6 months alone I've gone red; cut some terrible bangs; had some better bangs cut; then went back to brunette.

And now I'm contemplating yet another change. As always seems to happen when a girl decides to get serious about growing out her hair...I kind of think I want to go shorter. Here are the two looks I'm inspired by.

Should I go for it? Which one? Or should I just knock it off already and leave my hair alone?

What I Want Now

As we slug our way through these final transitional weeks, before winter takes a hike and ushers in spring to take its place, I'm yearning for a few new pieces.

I'm feeling the need for separates that are easy to pull on and layer up with tanks and cropped jackets. I'm ready to switch out long sleeves for short, to invest in a maxi dress that I can wear through summer, and a fabulous pair of bright red heels.

What's on your "now" list?

Beauty Moment - Dove VisibleCare Creme Body Wash

Dove is one of those great, iconic beauty brands that continually churns out great products. I use their deodorant line, refreshing body mists, and have relied on their body washes to clean my sensitive skin without stripping it of moisture. Now I have a new Dove product in my arsenal - VisibleCare Creme Body Wash.

According to Dove this body wash's "unique formula – with our highest concentration of NutriumMoisture™ yet—contains skin-natural building blocks to help improve your skin’s look over time, giving you visible results in just 1 week when used daily."

Dove VisibleCare Crème Body Washes are available in two formulas: Renewing, which nourishes and replenishes, and Softening, which softens skin and dry spots. When the company offered to send me a bottle of the product to review for you, I chose Softening. My skin has been super dry for the past few weeks and no amount of lotion seems to help. I was hopeful that an extra, extra shot of moisture in the shower would make my skin feel plush and soft.

The body wash is ultra creamy - it has the consistency of a very thick lotion - but lathers up into a nice, foamy wash. My skin does feel softer and soothed after using the body wasy. I won't say I saw an improvement in the way my skin looks...but then again, I wasn't really watching. I love the classic Dove beauty-bar scent of the wash and will purchase a replacement bottle when this one is empty. You can find it at your local Target, Wal-Mart, or other discount store.

Everyday Bombshell

New Shoe Week has been temporarily suspended due to the 3" of snow that have fallen in the Twin Cities. The rest of my newbies are sandals. I'm not hardcore enough to wear adorable-but-seasonally-inappropriate shoes. But I did pull out my knee-high boots for (what I hope is) one last jaunt outside in them.

I went to town with my eyeshadow today, mixing shades of gray and mint green. It came out pretty well, and made me feel like batting my eyelashes a bit all day.

Spotlight on: City Chic

I've been a fan of Autralian plus size retailer, City Chic, for over a year now. Much of that time, I lusted from afar because the company didn't ship to the US. But several months ago, City Chic became available here in the US. (Hurray!)

I know a lot of shoppers are leery of international shipping rates and the time it takes for purchases to arrive. Which is why I'm so incredibly impressed with City Chic's decision to offer free shipping to the US and free returns. I'm sure it won't always be that way, but it's the perfect incentive for all of us who want to get to know their brand.

City Chic is making it easy to order from them in another really cool way - by taking the guesswork out of determining which size to order. Their size chart not only lists out the measurements that fit their sizes. It also includes a comparison of their sizes to major plus retailers like Lane Bryant and Torrid. I've never seen that before.

I met the City Chic team last month in Las Vegas, which included the company's International President, Phil Ryan; their fit model & the face of City Chic, Courtney; and fashion stylist Reah Norman. Everyone was very down to earth and seemed very excited about the opportunities ahead to dress plus size women in the US.

I had a great chat with Phil in which he spoke candidly about the fact that there's a lot of market share available within the plus size fashion industry. City Chic differentiates itself by offering the trends plus size women want to participate in, when they want them, in garments made of good quality at a price point that's attainable.

Phil wanted me to have the experience of ordering from City Chic so I could share that with you. He asked me to choose a few pieces, then sent them off to me. My order arrived within about 10 days.

The first piece I chose was this yellow pleated tube top. It fits really well and features a band of rubberized elastic across the back to keep it in place. It's double lined beneath the chiffon pleated outer fabric, which speaks to its quality. I've worn the top with jeans and blazer at work; and with a pencil skirt and heels for girls' night out.

I'd featured this form fitting dress in a couple Polyvore set posts previously, so decided I should definitely see if it lived up to my expectations. Yep! It does. It's made of a nice, heavy cotton that skims over my curves. It's sexy and stylish; exactly what I (and my husband) go for on date night.

City Chic is a brand that I'm excited to welcome into my closet; I look forward to adding more pieces in the coming seasons!

*City Chic provided the top and dress to me, free of charge. This in no way influences the opinions I've stated above.

Everyday Bombshell

It's officially New Shoe Week here on Bombshell Beauty, so let's start with today's pair:

This is the Betsey Shoe by Jessica London. It's nice and roomy for my size 12W feet, and the padded insole goes a long way toward the overall comfort of this sandal. The heel is 2 1/2 inches which, for my height and frame is perfect. A little lift without any teetering. And what did I wear with my shoes?

It's rainy and crummy here in the Twin Cities, so I decided to pair a colorful top with a cozy sweater in order to keep my spirits up while staying warm.

Everyday Bombshell

I'm so excited about two components of today's outfit. The first is the dress. It's one I picked up last spring and wore the heck out of until late Fall. At that point, I pulled it out of rotation because I'd grown bored with it. But now, it's back! And it feels like new:

The second component that I'm really excited about is...

The shoes! I love these babies - they're cute and comfortable and purple. What more could I want?
