Loving What I Have

One of the biggest reasons (you know, aside from saving money) that I decided to take a 30-day breather from shopping is that I got tired of always thinking, "What am I going to buy next?" The next lipstick, pair of shoes, dress, jacket...I felt as though no matter how much I loved whatever I'd just purchased, I immediately began to wonder what I should pick up next. I've been amazed at two things:

1. How much of a habit shopping is for me. I receive so many emails from my favorite brands and retailers, every single day, enticing me with offers.

2. How freeing it is to know that I cannot buy anything until the end of May. I've even slowly begun to unsubscribe to those "SALE" emails...well, from the brands that I don't really care about, anyway.

I've been able to appreciate the things I have so much more, to enjoy them and rediscover some old favorites. Here's a collection of some of the things I've been loving lately:

I have a nail fixation as of late. The color I'm wearing the most is Essie's Splash of Grenadine. It's the perfect lavender pink shade, one of those that I'm asked constantly, 'What color are you wearing?" I picked it up right before the spending freeze - and it was actually free! I redeemed my Ulta points for it.

This is my mom's Mother's Day present. I've had it wrapped and sitting on our counter for over a week now because I'm so happy with the wrap job! The paper is something I unearthed in our hall closet - pretty sure it was bought at Target. The polka dots make me really happy. I hope the contents make Mom very happy!

I picked up this really great tank dress on super clearance from Lane Bryant a while ago. It's not yet been worn (note the tags still on it!) because I'm saving it for something really special coming up in June. More on that soon, but in the meantime I love to pull it out and look at it.

While shopping less, I'm reading more.

And drinking more. Just kidding! Ok, well in all seriousness - I do love chardonnay.

Dove sent me two sticks of the newest additions to the Light Radiance line of deodorant*. I know, it's kind of funny that deodorant has made my list of things that I love. But anyone who's read this blog for a while has noticed my well-documented appreciation for Dove deodorant. What can I say? I'm appreciating the little things. They smell great - I've been using Light Radiance & Sheer Silk - do everything deodorant should do performance-wise, and I've noticed less irritation from shaving.

I've rediscovered a love of Kate Spade bags, right within my very own closet. I bought several Kate bags right out of college. They've been true work horses of function and style for me. This is one of the newest bags I picked up, again right before the freeze. The punchy orange color makes me so happy, and I swear I could fit a baby and a watermelon inside. It's that roomy!

Studded black flats from the store which shall not be named - they go with everything in my closet.

  1. Great list of things you love! I'm a Dove fan too! :)

  2. Thanks Monique! I feel much less nerdy for having included it on my list. :)

  3. love that nail colour.
    lol, I use Dove too.

  4. Too funny, I will be ending my own "no shopping" month this Sunday. Basically no new clothes or new shoes.

It's actually been quite enlightening as I've been really tempted on 3 separate occasions but stopped myself.

    Good luck!

  5. Hey hun, not sure if you have one of these already, but gave you an award on my blog:

  6. I wonder if I could successfully put myself on a spending freeze. Maybe I'll try it at some point. Um, I'll get back to you on that...but seriously? I should be able to do it, shouldn't it? I'm feeling a challenge coming on..

I love Dove too. Just saying. And the bag is awesome!

  7. What's been most tempting, Merrily? And more important, will you be going back for the purchases after your ban is over?

Kenz...I don't suggest the spending freeze unless you're really feeling it. It's rough stuff!!

  8. I love clothes, shoes and accessories. I found myself almost giving in on a Betsey Johnson pink and pearl bangle, (another) new purse, a really cute dress at Torrid but because I was on my ban, I had to pass.

I have to admit that I did purchase quite a few things after my ban was over. Oops!

However, I still think it was a good experience because it forced me to think about what I really wanted instead of giving in all the time. I found myself mentally adding up things and guaranteed within a few days I found I didn't really want was just a spur of the moment thing.

The things I purchased recently were after a month of deliberation and thought, so I don't feel super guilty about them.

I am instituting another ban starting next Monday of six weeks to see how that goes.

  9. I hope you'll keep us updated on your's hard to go on a shopping ban! Stop by my blog to have a chance to win a new shopping required!
